There is an alternate vacancy on the Zoning Board of Appeals...

This position can be filled by a Republican, Democrat or Independent.  Alternates participate in meetings, but cannot vote except when "seated" (actually taking the place of an absent regular member).  Being an alternate is a good starting place for anyone interested in participating in their local government.  You learn the functions of the Board, procedures, protocol and the limitations of your authority.  The ZBA meets on the second Monday of each month except October when the meeting is on the second Tuesday.  The primary function of the ZBA is to review and approve or reject appeals of zoning enforcement officer decisions where the property owner believes a hardship caused by the land exists.  Please contact John Moulson, current chairman of this Board, at 860-886-0775 if you are interested in being appointed to this position

Overview

The Zoning Board of Appeals shall have the powers and duties prescribed in Section 8-6 of the Connecticut General Statutes. The Zoning Board of Appeals consists of eight members plus legal council and the Assessor / Zoning Enforcement Officer.

Application

This Board governs the appeals for variances, for location approval, approval for dealers in or the repairing of motor vehicles and appeals to decisions of the Zoning Enforcement Officer. All appeals and applications for variances made to the Zoning Board of Appeals shall be in writing on a form obtainable from the Zoning Enforcement Officer or by downloading an application (PDF) and should be submitted within 10 days prior to a meeting, along with material showing the plans for which the variance is being requested.

A check in the amount of $110 made payable to the “Town of Preston” shall be submitted with the application. A representative that will be able to answer questions on the application should be prepared to attend the meeting.
